6 Unique Venues I Have Worked At In London

A few of my favourite venues for filmmaking projects & events

Introduction

During the last two decades I have filmed at estimated 1000+ venues across the world. So its safe to say I have developed a discerning eye for venues that stand out on camera. In this article I want to share six of my favouite venues in London. These are venues I think offer something distinct and both from the perspective of a filmmaker, but also as visitor. These are in no particular order.

1. BANQUETING HOUSE. This property on Whitehall is managed by Historical Royal Palaces. At first the exterior blends in seamlessly with the surrounding government buildings, but a clue to its status begins with a plaque over the doormarking the spot where Kings Charles I was hanged. Inside is a vast banqueting hall that plays host to state dinners and occasions. It has a beautifully ornate painted ceiling, huge chandeliers and grand windows. If that wasn't enough to impress, it also has a red velvet mantelled throne at one end. I have filmed here a few times and on each occasion it feels like I am shooting a big budget period drama.

2. MANDARIN ORIENTAL. London has a lot of luxury hotels and this number is increasing every year. The Mandarin Oriental is a venue I have enjoyed working at more than a dozen times. I love its elegant facade and beautiful salons and ballroom which make a great setting for a party or special event. However one thing I particular like in the attractive rear garden. Although not huge, it is nicely sandwiched between the ornate rear of the building and Hyde Park, making an especially filmic place for any type of project or event.

3. SILVER STURGEON. Although not a traditional bricks and mortar venue, the magestic vessel owned by Wood's Silverfleet provides a truly luxurious space that comes with some of the best views of London. I have been lucky enough to board this motor yacht many times over the years, both as guest and a filmmaker. I particularly like the interior design and the opportunities the metropolitan landscape provides for great visuals. Filming on The Silver Sturgeon is a feast to the imaginative mind and I look forward to my next project aboard this vessel.

4. TWO TEMPLE PLACE. I first entered this building a few years ago dressed as a Shaman. Its located on the edge of Temple Inn and has all the characterists of a spooky mansion. This is probably why it had been selected as the venue for a spectacular Hallowe'en party I was attending. Even though I have filmed there since for several less spooky projects, I think it has all the character and uniqueness to leave a strong impression on the visitor. As a film location it has incredible features and perspectives and I would imagine it has been used as a film set for many period projects.

5. ANNABELS. Owner Richard Caring and his wife Patricia have been personal clients of mine in the past and they clearly have a great sense of taste. Annabels has perhaps one of the most opulent interiors I have ever had the pleasure of beholding. Each room is magnificient and designed to impress the mind of the visitor. Over the years I have created a number of films at this exclusive club, none more memorable perhaps than a private party I filmed with a private concert by Kool & the Gang. Whether used for an event or a commercial, Annabel's has all the production value you could ever want.

6. THE GHERKIN. Although these days this London landmark is dwarfed by neighbouring skyscrapers, I think it is still one of most elegant buildings in London both inside and out. The top floors are managed by hospitality company Searcy's and it is these floors that always delight me every time I have the opportunity to visit. The double height 40th floor with its diamond shaped windows and conical ceiling make a really impressive space whilst the curvature of the building means you don't get vertigo admiring the views of London. As a filmmaker I always enjoy leveraging the beautiful symmetry and elegant design of this buillding.
