Interviews in Wham! George Michael & Me

How good interviews make a great documentary

Introduction

I can occasionally be seen in my local gym watching documentaries whilst working up a sweat on the treadmill or cross trainer. Bad films add to my effort, good ones can distract me from my effort.  The Wham documentary I watched earlier this month made me forget I was in the gym altogether!

This Netflix release has garnered attention and praise for its heartfelt tribute to the legendary pop duo, and in particular, the late George Michael. Although it initially felt like a tabloid recap of the group’s 80’s fame, it soon captured my interest through its in-depth interviews with those who really knew George Michael, including  his close friend and former bandmate, Andrew Ridgeley.

I was particularly touched by Andrew’s recollection of the shy and awkward Georgios Panayiotou arriving at Bushey Meads School and being befriended by the more confident Andrew. As the documentary progressed, it reminded me of how often in life it’s the people around you that provide the inspiration and support to grow and achieve your aims. In the case of George Michael, it was clear that for better or worse, Georgios Panayiotou couldn’t have become an international star George Michael without the love and support of his close friends.

Good interviews are eseential and enjoyed the way the documentary managed to celebrate Wham's music whilst sensitively delving into the emotional complexities of George Michael's life. During the course of the film, it unflinchingly explores his rise to stardom, his battles with fame, his coming out as a gay man, and the impact these experiences had on his music and identity. I also enjoyed the intimate archive footage during the duo's heyday which seemed to reflect their genuine character out of the spotlight.

Personally, I think “Wham! George Michael & Me" is a must-watch documentary that combines exceptional storytelling, emotional depth, and iconic music to celebrate the legacy of Wham and George Michael. It provides a nuanced and moving portrait that makes a compelling and unforgettable viewing experience for filmmakers and fans alike.
